Health Service Development
Drawing on our findings, we provide technical assistance to the Ministry of Health and Care (MoHCC), the National AIDS Council (NAC) and other partners in implementing, coordination and offering training in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support. Using the latest scientific research findings, we develop and implement a range of activities to introduce evidence–based HIV prevention and treatment services in our project areas.
We also assist in strengthening the capacity of MoHCC, NAC and other implementers to monitor and evaluate their HIV and AIDS interventions in Manicaland Province. Through our engagement with local service providers we continually explore new opportunities for development.
Completed service development projects
With funding from the Tropical Health and Education Trust, the Manicaland Centre set out to strengthen AIDS Treatment and Care Services in Mutasa District, Zimbabwe. This was done by upgrading local health centre infrastructure to increase capacity, by acquiring essential ART equipment (a CD4 Analyser for use by the District Medical Officer), by increasing qualified human healthcare resources (through training in the diagnosis of HIV and the treatment of AIDS and opportunistic infections including TB and training in more effective methods of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV), and by engaging with local communities to promote the timely uptake of HIV/AIDS and TB services.
More specifically, in 2011 we: i) trained 20 nurses in treatment of AIDS (ART) and opportunistic infections (OIs), ii) worked to ensure that 30 nurses qualify in rapid testing for HIV infection, iii) trained 30 nurses in PMTCT, iv) purchased and made available a CD4 count machine at Bonda Mission Hospital, and v) upgraded 6 rural health centres (RHCs) to provide follow-up ART drug supplies and facilitated 12 community meetings to promote ART uptake and sputum sampling.
