Data Access

Figure 1: Data processing steps
We have developed and documented an anonymised core dataset
which is available for unrestricted download under licence agreement terms. This core dataset contains individual level data from all six rounds of our adult survey and consists of selected demographic measures, behavioural indicators and HIV testing. It also contains data on HIV test results across all rounds to assess HIV prevalence and incidence. More details on the core dataset and the variables included can be found in the supporting material. Data from any new rounds will be added to the publicly downloadable core dataset within 18 months of becoming available for analysis by project investigators, staff, and collaborators.
Additional quantitative data not available in the core dataset will be available to independent researchers upon request. Qualitative data from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions will not be shared with other researchers as they contain sensitive information and cannot be anonymized in small communities. To avoid duplication of efforts, lists of published, completed, on-going and planned analyses will be made available on request.

Figure 2: How to apply for additional data
Interested researchers are invited to submit a proposal if they would like to use any data additional to the core dataset for independent analyses. For this purpose, we provide a template proposal. In this proposal, applicants are requested to state the objectives of their analyses, to demonstrate that they have the capacity to conduct the intended investigations, and to show that they (or their nominated collaborators) have sufficient knowledge/understanding of the context in which the data were collected to interpret the results appropriately, and to provide details on how they anticipate to disseminate their findings. If the local context is unfamiliar to the interested researchers, they can indicate whether they wish for collaboration with the Manicaland Project members.
A project data access committee will evaluate each proposal and determine whether all criteria are met. Successful applicants would then be required to sign a data sharing agreement which would specify the purpose and terms of the arrangement. In the event that specimens are shared, the researchers involved will be required to make the results of new diagnostic tests conducted on individual specimens available to the project on a timely basis for inclusion in the database so that, for example, further analyses by the Manicaland Project and othe researchers can be carried out in which these results are linked to other survey or biological data.
